Beyond Carnism was founded in 2012 by Melanie Joy, two years after the publication of her book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows. The organization was originally named Carnism Awareness and Action Network (CAAN). The name was changed to Beyond Carnism in 2015, and the organization operated under fiscal sponsorships until 2020.
